Foster Homes Critical to Lifesaving

Foster Homes Urgently Needed as Cat Depot Steps Up to Rescue 70 Vulnerable Cats and Kittens

Rescue Update from 5/30/202670 Cats & Kittens Safe Thanks to You!

The past 48 hours have been nothing short of incredible. Following our rescue of 70 cats and kittens from the DeSoto County Animal Shelter, our community has stepped up in a huge way:
  • 98 foster applications received
  • 51 cats and kittens placed into foster homes between yesterday and today
Nearly all of the rescued kittens have already headed off to loving foster homes where they can grow, heal, and thrive. We still have a special litter of nine kittens receiving medical treatment, but four of them are expected to head to foster next week as they continue to improve.

Meanwhile, our veterinary team has been hard at work, with many of the adult cats receiving their spay/neuter surgeries today as they prepare for their next chapter.

Every foster application, donation, share, and word of encouragement has helped make this lifesaving effort possible. Seeing these cats leave for foster homes is exactly the outcome we hoped for when we answered the call to help.

If you submitted a Foster Application but have not been contacted yet, we will be taking tomorrow off for well-deserved rest and then will follow up next week. The next needy litter of kittens is already waiting for Cat Depot.

Thank you to our community of staff, volunteers, foster families, and supporters who have rallied around these cats. Together, we’re giving them the second chance they deserve.

Rescue Update from 5/29/2026Our tired but determined team is blown away by the overwhelming show of support we received from our community. In just a few hours, we received over 50 new foster applications! And already 26 of the 70 cats and kittens we rescued yesterday are in loving foster homes—and we’re just getting started.

THANK YOU for opening your hearts and homes. You are the reason second chances exist.

We’re working as quickly as possible to connect every approved foster with cats in need—if you’ve applied and haven’t heard back yet, please hang tight with us.

Rescue Post from 5/28/2026 – Cat Depot is responding to an urgent plea for help from the Desoto County Animal Shelter, where overcrowding has created a critical situation for approximately 70 kittens and adoptable cats in need of rescue placement.

We could not turn away from animals with nowhere else to go. But we urgently need the community’s help.

At Cat Depot, foster care is at the heart of lifesaving.  And right now, Cat Depot’s foster homes are completely full. We already have 76 cats and kittens in foster care, and we need additional foster families to step forward immediately so we can continue saying “yes” to lifesaving rescue efforts.

The good news is fostering is easier than many people think. You do not need prior experience. You do not need a large home. Even a spare bathroom, guest room, or small quiet space can save a life.

Cat Depot provides everything fosters need, including:

  • Veterinary care
  • Food and litter
  • Beds, toys, and enrichment
  • Training and expert guidance
  • After-hours emergency support

Fosters simply provide:

  • A safe temporary space
  • A one- to two-week commitment
  • Love, patience, and compassion

Fostering truly is the backbone of lifesaving work. It allows kittens to grow and thrive in a safe home environment where they can receive individualized care, socialization, and affection during their most critical early weeks of life.

Without foster homes, many of these vulnerable kittens simply won’t have the opportunity they deserve.

Foster Program Growth

This year, our foster program has experienced incredible growth thanks to the compassion of our community. As of today, Cat Depot has 59 foster families actively helping save lives and has placed 297 cats and kittens into foster care in 2026.

At this same time last year, we had 40 foster families and 159 cats and kittens in foster care. That represents a remarkable 48% increase in foster families and an 86% increase in the number of cats and kittens we’ve been able to help this year.

We are deeply grateful for every foster parent who has opened their home and heart to animals in need.
