At Cat Depot, we believe every cat deserves a loving home—no exceptions. Yet some wonderful cats are often overlooked simply because of three letters: FIV.
It’s time to change that.
Our Positively Purr-fect campaign is all about shining a light on FIV-positive cats who are healthy, full of personality, and ready to become someone’s perfect companion.
Meet Rowdy
Rowdy will literally reach for your love. This handsome boy with kind eyes is the definition of a good guy. His gentle spirit begs for love, and too much love is not in his vocabulary.
Rowdy is FIV+ and thriving, which makes him Postively Purrfect, here’s why:
- He’s healthy and doesn’t need special medication
- He should live a long, normal life
- He can live safely with other friendly, spayed and neutered cats
- He needs a life of love and will give back that love freely
- His only “condition”? Being extremely affectionate.
If you want a cat that will adore you. Shower you with love and devotion. And appreciate every opportunity for a cuddle, come meet the cat who will absolutely steal your heart (and your lap).
What does FIV+ Really Mean?
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a slow-acting virus that affects a cat’s immune system. While that may sound concerning, the reality is far more reassuring:
- Most FIV+ cats live long, normal lives
- They typically do not require special medication
- With routine veterinary care, they thrive just like any other cat
In fact, many FIV+ cats live just as long as FIV-negative cats and often pass from the same age-related conditions.
Clearing Up Common Myths
There’s a lot of outdated information about FIV. Here’s what adopters should know:
Fact: FIV is primarily transmitted through deep bite wounds—most often from serious fighting between unneutered males. It is not spread through cuddling, grooming, sharing food bowls, or playing.
Fact: FIV+ cats can safely live with FIV-negative cats in stable, peaceful homes where fighting is unlikely.
Fact: FIV only affects cats. It cannot be transmitted to humans, dogs, or other animals.
Fact: Spaying and neutering your cat reduces risk of FIV.
More Than a Diagnosis
The most important thing to understand about FIV+ cats is this:
They are not defined by their diagnosis.
They are lap cats, toy chasers, biscuit makers, sunbathers, and loyal companions. They have unique personalities, preferences, and quirks—just like any other cat waiting for a home.
When you adopt an FIV+ cat, you’re not taking on a medical case. You’re welcoming a loving companion into your life.
What FIV+ Cats Really Need
The truth is simple. FIV+ cats need the same things all cats do:
- A safe, indoor home
- Annual veterinary checkups
- Nutritious food and enrichment
- Love, patience, and companionship
That’s it.
Give Them the Chance They Deserve
Too often, FIV+ cats are passed over—not because of who they are, but because of misunderstanding. But those who take the time to learn the truth often discover something special:
These cats love just as deeply, play just as joyfully, and bond just as strongly as any other.
If you’re looking for a companion, don’t let a label hold you back. Your perfect match might be waiting—purring, head-butting, and ready to come home.
